Race Report: Memphis in May Olympic Distance

May 23, 2004, trying to extend the early season peak a few weeks I decided to travel to Memphis. This course is known for being fast and without a wetsuit swim, it would surely favor stronger swimmers especially with the time trial start (athletes leave every 3 seconds). I swam alone the entire race and was the first one in my age group out of the water. I started out the bike nice and easy building into a strong solid 318-watt average for most of the race. I turned in the second fastest bike of the day only losing to pro Greg Remaly. I spoke with USAT official Charlie Crawford at another race and he told me the officials were going to disqualify me because my bike split was so fast. My run left a lot to be desired, while running solo has always been tough for me; I should have split faster than 39 minutes. I still held on to win the overall amateur race and would have placed seventh in the pro field. I out-biked Ironman champion Tim DeBoom, that doesn’t happed everyday.

Race Report: America’s Triathlon Austin, TX

May 31, 2004, my second trip to Austin for this race. This year I was competing in the invitational wave for a $4,000 purse. It was a wetsuit swim and I started out smooth and relaxed in the lead group, then fatigue and lactic acid buildup accumulated and I was dropped after about 500m. I swam alone for a while then ended up pulling a group of swimmers the remainder of the race. I was 11th out of the water and full two minutes back of the leaders; I had some work to do. I turned in the fastest bike of the day out riding 2002 US Pro Cycling champion Chann McRae who actually drafted off me the entire race. I have some great pictures of this for proof. He was given a 2-minute penalty but had he been watched more carefully he would have been disqualified. I nearly caught the lead pack on the bike and started the run in a dismal 6th place where I stayed and finished the race. I died in the heat of the day, and split 18:30 first 5k, then 22:30 second 5k. With the disqualification of winner Marcel Vifian for drafting I was bumped into 5th place taking home $100. The taper is definitely gone at this point and its time to get back into the training phases and focus on the end of the season.  This is a good race but with the four-lap in town bike course most of my strength was taken out of the race and athletes were allowed to draft. This may not make the schedule in the future.

Ironman Wetsuit Sponsorship

Thanks to my latest sponsor Ironman Wetsuits and Ian Pund for the new Ironman Stealth Full Suit. I will be racing the Stealth this season and look for the swim to be back on course, as my training volume will drastically increase this summer. The Cannondale Ironman 5000 has proven to be one of the fastest bikes around. My 4th fastest bike overall at ITU worlds, 2nd fastest bike overall at Memphis in May, and fastest bike overall at America’s Triathlon prove this bike is as fast as it gets (I like to think my training had a role in those splits as well). I look to continue my relationship with Jim Fungaroli and Cannondale.
