Race Report: Topeka Tinman, Topeka, KS

June 19, 2004, I made a last minute decision at work on Friday afternoon to attend this race with Kirsten Buck and Billy Gilbert. We left Hutchinson at 3:00 AM on Saturday and then waited in line to register. I started the swim on the outside and pulled away from the field in the first 100 yards. I kept my lead in the swim finishing first with a 32 second lead. The bike is were I really put the distance on the field, out riding everyone by 5 minutes. I felt nice and relaxed and even backed off the pace a bit to save my legs for the run. I started the run out slow and found out I had a 7 min lead over second place so I gradually built up speed and cruised the 7 mile run in 44:10. Quite the odd distance triathlon at a 1200-yard swim, 19.5-mile bike, and 7 mile run. I put in a solid week of running so my legs were very tired. I was very pleased with the results and the article in the Topeka Capital Journal Newspaper.

Race Report: Dutchman Triathlon, Pella, IA

June 26, 2004, I was returning to Iowa for a wedding and given the chance I really wanted to support Dan Vande Lune’s triathlon. He is a great supporter of the University of Iowa Triathlon Team and just an all-around great guy. This was only the second year of the race, and after last year’s 4th place finish I was looking to make a statement at my first Iowa triathlon of the year. The early morning wind created quite the chop in the water and presented some whitecaps. I knew a swim like this would favor me. The only downside was the wind was blowing the buoys creating an ever-changing swim course. I broke out right away and kept my lead the entire swim even swimming way off course and further than I needed. Once again the bike was where I made up most of my time on the field. I nearly beat the field by 3 minutes on the rolling hill bike course. I had to conserve some energy on the bike and slowed the pace on the way back. I told myself the race started on the run. I forced myself to run scared and use positive self-talk and cues to improve my run. “Small quick strides, relax your upper body” Apparently it worked wonders and I turned in my fastest 10k triathlon run and broke the 6 minute per mile pace for the first time.  A great mid season test and wonderful race put on by Dr. Dan Vande Lune.

Race Report: Crossroads Triathlon Dewitt, IA

July 11, 2004, back in Davenport, IA working for the week and I jumped at the opportunity to race my coach’s triathlon, Crossroads. After placing third last year with little training I was determine to dominate the race. Charlie Cunnick, local swim phenom was in the water and I was planning on catching a draft off of him until I realized 150 yards into the race I was ahead of him. The new Ironman Wetsuit is truly fast. I was first out of the water in my wave and hopped on my bike en route to the fastest bike of the day crunching out 320 watts and 26.8 mph over the 15-mile course. I knew once again the race really started on the run. I put myself in a substantial lead by the start of the run but forced myself to race mentally. It was a flat fast run and I cruised in holding 5:35 pace for the 4th fastest run of the day.
