Race Report: Madeira ITU Triathlon World Championships

May 8, 2004, the first Olympic distance race of the season and a spectacular breakthrough race.  I was riding my new Cannondale Ironman 5000 and it was light and stiff on the hills of Funchal. My swim was average and I came out in a draft line with the main lead group then hopped on the steed and started picking off riders. I cranked out most of the bike in the big ring due to some mechanical problems but still turned in the fourth fastest bike of the day. The run left a little to be desired but considering the hammering on the bike it was not bad. My quads were sore but the aerobic capacity was there. I held on to finish with the bronze medal in the 20-24 age group and turned in the 13th fastest time of the day. My race splits and results are shown below.

Race Report: Fort Leavenworth Sprint Triathlon Ft. Leavenworth, KS

May 1, 2004, a short sprint right before worlds to make sure the new bike is running fine. I cooked on the bike turning in the fastest split of the day and the second fastest swims and runs. A great preparation race and a solid overall victory on the new bike.

Race Report: BTU Sprint Triathlon Bryan, Texas

April 4, 2004, the first race of the season was eagerly anticipated as being great and after riding the bike course the night before the race I felt confident in my ability to really hammer on the bike. A short 15-mile bike included several small rollers and some short climbs but nothing requiring an out of the saddle crunch. Since it was a winner takes all $500 purse I was disappointed with losing by 26 seconds to former US Postal Team rider Chann McRae without being in the same wave and especially since I didn’t race with aero or disc wheels and made some transition mistakes. Oh well, you race and you learn. Below is a table of my race results. I averaged 24.4 mph on the bike and generated 304 watts over the entire course and close to 330 watts for the majority of the ride.

Sponsorship for 2004

Along with 2003 sponsor Rudy Project I obtained 2004 sponsorship from Cannondale Bicycles and now proudly ride a new Ironman 5000 built with Alcoa Aluminum Tubing. This bike is fast and I’m expected big improvements in my bike splits this year. I also signed on with Team Michelin grassroots racing team and will be training and racing on Michelin Tires. My first apparel sponsorship came from Derek Wiback of Sock Guy, while not an official rep for 2004 Derek has kept me on the list and provided some product. Bike Pedaler of Wichita graciously assembled my new Cannondale the day it arrived in order to give me a few more rides before I took it to Portugal. I would like to thank all of my sponsors and help them receive value from my racing and exposure.
