Fair Weather Training
On
January 15, I jumped in my car and made the commute from Des Moines, IA
to Tucson, AZ
for my winter training camp. After 24 hours on the road and stop in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center, I arrived in Tucson at Doug Friman’s residence. Doug is a friend that
I met last year at the training center in Chula Vista, CA.
We went through the Navy SEAL training together and then reconnected last
summer in Bellingham, WA,
at US Pro Nationals. Doug is a great triathlete (alternate on the 2004 Olympic
Team) and an all around upstanding person. He has been calling Tucson his home for nearly six years and I am grateful
to have the opportunity to train and live with him for a few weeks.
My
first week of training in Arizona was spectacular. I logged my largest volume week to date at 30.5
hours. I put in 25,000 yards in the pool with the Tucson Ford Aquatics Team. The team is a large,
nationally competitive team coached by former University of Arizona swimmers. I logged 246 miles on the bike and was glad to finally get
outside on the bike. While the mornings are a little chilly on the bike it
usually warms to the high 60’s. Simply perfect winter training conditions. My
run volume for the week totaled 56 miles over the rolling hills of Tucson. Doug has been a great influence on my training
thus far and Tucson was just what I needed to jump start my season.
I
will be staying in Tucson until my first race of the season, Ralph’s
California 70.3 Ironman in Oceanside, CA, on March 18.
My
temporary address in Tucson is:

NEW Sponsors
EAS: I would like to welcome EAS as my title nutritional supplements sponsor.
Based out of Golden, CO, EAS is the leading sports nutrition company in the
world. The new EAS endurance line will be my primary fuel for during
and after training and racing. I will be using EAS Endurathon, Muscle Armour, HMB, VO2Peak, Race
Recovery, Myoplex, and Whey Protein. My contact at EAS is fellow triathlete Tim Buese. With EAS as my primary nutritional supplements I will
train harder and recover faster.
Fitness Sports: Steve Bobenhouse at Fitness Sports in West Des Moines, IA
has agreed to provide with me with the necessary training and racing footwear
for the 2006 season. Fitness Sports has long been a part of my running success
dating back to my days as a runner at Ankeny High School. I will be proud to represent Steve, and his
outstanding running and fitness store.
